The name of the show is the title of a terrific Joni Mitchell song from her 1972 album “For The Roses” and it is the theme song for the program The style of the show is women singers – mainly jazz but including some cool folk, blues, R & B, soul, rock, country, and pop artists. It continues a show I previously presented on 3 OCR – Otway Community Radio, broadcast in 2012-13.
It features some classic jazz divas such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone, Betty Carter, Carmen McRae, Julie London.
You might also hear more contemporary artists like Joni Mitchell, KD Lang, Rickie Lee Jones, Cassandra Wilson, Diana Krall, Stacey Kent, Holly Cole, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Cyrille Aimee, Esperanza Spalding, Cecile Salvant.
Perhaps some Blues, Soul/Rhythm & Blues singers like Etta James, Ruthie Foster, Chaka Khan, Amy Winehouse, Dusty Springfield, Gladys Night, Bonnie Raitt, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Imelda May, Samantha Fish, Meena Cryle, P.P. Arnold.
Or maybe something a bit poppy like Carly Simon, Linda Ronstadt, Beth Orton, Bjork, Janis Ian, Phoebe Snow, Grace Slick, Suzanne Vega, Marianne Faithfull, Corinne Bailey Rae.
Tasty country/folk from Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, Eilen Jewell, Sandy Denny, Linda Thompson, Gillian Welch, Cowboy Junkies, Crystal Gayle, Eddi Reader, Good Lovelies, Patty Griffin, Kathleen Edwards.
Or a singer from Europe, especially Scandinavia such as Caecille Norby, Viktoria Tolstoy, Carla Bruni, Emiliana Torrini, Agneta Baumann, Ebba Forsberg, First Aid Kit, Hilda Heft.
Mixed Australian content from Kate Ceberano, Abby Dobson, Angie Hart, The Idea of North, Christine Anu, Christine Sullivan, Sarah McKenzie, Bonnie Jensen, Nicki Parrott, Hetty Kate, Kristin Berardi
Or some soft bossa from Astrud or Bebel Gilberto, Orleya, Karen Souza, The Amazonics, Carmen Cuesta, Cecilia Dale, Ituana.
Even some Apollo Bay based or linked artists like Princess One Point Five (Sarah Jane Wentzki), Cath Richardson, Catalina Lonie-Richardson, Spyndrift, Katie Maxwell, Meralyn Stewart.
Anyway you can get the drift – these are just some of the 1200 plus women I have played in the past, more than 4300 songs so far – a mixed bag of styles/genres/boxes – I am not a fan of trying to pin down any one word definition of an artist – many of those mentioned could jump into several of these boxes or into entirely different ones.
If you think that youmight like to hear any of these or similar (or different) fabulous women, tune into 87.6 FM if you’re local, or log on to 3abr.org on a Wednesday evening 9-11 pm Australian Eastern Daylight Time. Shows are re-broadcast Friday afternoons 12.30-2.30 pm.
